Spelling

Learning spelling skills is important because it supports reading fluency, makes writing clearer, and equips students to communicate their ideas effectively. When students know how to spell, they can focus on expressing their thoughts and are more willing to use richer, more complex language in their writing.

Key areas Lisa focuses on include:

  • Phonological Awareness

  • Sounds & Spelling Patterns

  • Spelling Features & Rules

  • Syllable Types

  • Heart Words (high frequency words which we can’t spell by sounding out)

Writing

Writing is more than putting words on a page. By learning essential writing skills, including how to plan, revise and edit, students become more organised, think more clearly, and communicate their ideas confidently. Teaching writing step-by-step helps students see that writing is a skill they can improve with practice, making it feel more manageable over time.

Key areas Lisa focuses on include:

  • Grammar and Punctuation

  • Sentence Structure

  • Text-level Organisation

  • Genre Knowledge

  • Vocabulary Development

  • Writing Process Skills

Reading

Strong reading skills give students confidence and help them understand what they read. Developing accuracy and fluency makes reading smoother and more enjoyable, reduces frustration, and supports success in every area of school.

Key areas Lisa focuses on include:

  • Syllable Types

  • Spelling Patterns

  • Heart Words

  • Reading Fluency

  • Reading Accuracy

  • Comprehension

Each student receives a sound pack and writing books to use during lessons. These are stored in a folder that students are encouraged to take home for optional practice and bring to every session. Home practice can help reinforce learning and boost confidence, but it is not required.

Our Teaching Approach

Structured, Synthetic Phonics

Structured, synthetic phonics teaches students to connect letters (graphemes) with their sounds (phonemes) in a clear, step-by-step way. Students learn to blend these sounds to read words and segment them to spell accurately. This method is highly systematic and helps students build strong decoding skills, which are essential for fluent reading, spelling and writing.

Orton-Gillingham Approach

The Orton-Gillingham approach is a research-based method designed to support students who struggle with reading and spelling. It combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning so students see, hear, and physically engage with letters and sounds. This multi-sensory approach reinforces learning, builds confidence, and helps students master reading, spelling and writing skills.

  • These approaches give students a clear, step-by-step way to read and spell.

  • They focus on building strong foundational skills so students can read and write accurately and confidently.

  • Using systematic, multi-sensory methods helps students remember and apply what they learn, even if reading or spelling has been challenging previously.

Our Space

Lisa has created a welcoming, dedicated learning space designed to help students feel comfortable, focused, and ready to succeed.

Parents are welcome to join the teaching session and sit alongside their child if they wish. Alternatively, Lisa provides an adjoining space where parents can relax, read, or work on their own.
